a great read!

Dear Class,

I am reading a book in one of my classes and much of the book discusses issues that Craig is going over in class- the book is called The Contingent Object of Contemporary Art by Martha Buskirk

So far we have read chapters 3 and 4- 4 especially pertains to the readymade- it is titled Context as Subject- i want to encourage you all to read this book if you have time- it is one of the best books i have had to read in graduate school thus far- so interesting!

Falala Cappella

Hi friends! Need a study break/have nothing to do on Tuesday night? The 3 UF a cappella groups are having a Holiday showcase at Orange and Brew at 8 PM this Tues (Nov 30th). There will be a hot chocolate bar and it's free! We'll be singing normal songs and some Holiday favorites ("All I Want for Christmas is You"?!). The Sedoctaves go on last :)

some suggestions-

1. eat till you can not eat any more

2. take a nap (preferably several)

3. make photographs! -use this time to really be creative! explore and create!

4. think of titles for your work- again i am going to ask you all to have titles- it is important to take ownership of your work!

5. re-read the articles- and choose perhaps one or two that directly relate to your project, it is important in the next crit to reference these, and talk about how your work deals with the issues of authorship, originality, the readymade, combine, and how your work is in dialogue with the work made in the past.

6. write me a quick paragraph about your project- this will not only let me get an idea of where you are headed, but will help you articulate your goals and motivation for the project-
include-
possible title
issues surrounding the project
what it will look like

reminder for Friday- Art Bash

as we all know art bash is this coming friday- and as a reminder we are moving our class up an hour from 3-5 instead of 4-6. I received an email from Coach Craig saying that preferable we work in the film developing room, scanning room or the dark room during our class period because work from the Advanced class will be in the classroom..
this means- that you all have to bring work to work on. It is a work day:
bring negatives to print
film to develop
items to photograph on the copy stand
things to scan

but working on your papers this week is not gonna work because we do not really have table space to do this. We can use this time to talk bout printing, and i can answer any questions if you have them. we can talk bout the assignment more but most importantly we need to utilize the time.

THIS IS YOUR LAST LAB BEFORE YOUR PROJECTS ARE DUE.

so lets make some art!

also, i would encourage you all to bring in a few prints that you think are your best of the semester thus far- We will be hanging them in the dark room hallways during class. This is optional, but it gives you an opportunity to show work! Also, if you want to print some of your color images you can do this too, now that the printer is back and working again.

WORK DAY!

Dear class,


today is friday November 12th- and it is a work day. We will be using the entire period to work.. meaning printing in the darkroom, sandwiching negatives, scanning, using the copy stand, working on your papers, discussing and workshopping your next project or articles assigned in class- regardless on what you choose to work on, it is necessary that you bring something to occupy yourself for the entire class. We have very few lab days this semester and it is important to utilize this time wisely.

I look forward to seeing you all in class.

In addition, please bring your 4 best prints that you have created up to this point- we will be hanging them in the darkroom in preparation for Art Bash next Friday. Thank you.

dear class!

please remember to post the link to the color images so i can go ahead and start grading these projects!

also, as mentioned earlier, i am encouraging you to submit a photograph into the juried photo show, the deadline is this thursday, if you need help matting, selecting, or printing your color or b/w images larger (i might even have some color paper you can use) please let me know asap. it would be a great experience and is a good thing to do!
