must haves for Friday Crit....

your second critique is coming up this friday. I want to remind you of what is expected...

*you should have 10 images of site- you can either do 2 series of 5 enlargements or one series of 10- it is encouraged that each series is cohesive.
*you should have 5 contact prints
*you should have your visual research notebooks with a collection of archived images
*you should have your work hung before class so we can jump into critique
*you should be reviewing the visual literacy vocabulary list in order to use these terms during discussion
*you should review the readings by Krauss and Hirsch because it is necessary to incorporate these readings into our discussion
*you should bring food if you want :)

EXTRA HELP

I hope everyone is excited about printing and ready to make beautiful prints!
I am willing to come in on Sunday (tomorrow) to help with printing- but i am only to come in if i know people will be there. I will come in only if people respond to this post and let me know a time to come. So- if you want me to come- respond with the time frame you will be there and i will attempt to stop by during that time for about 2 hours or so.

so tomorrow is a big day- we are going to make contact prints and learn split filter printing!

Things you need for class-

Developed negatives in plastic negative sleeves

we will go over the process and make some prints- it is going to be fun. i promise.

also- just a reminder- i am still going to the Harn at 2 and will be able to drive 4 people if you want- or you can just meet us at the Harn- I think it is a good idea to see as much art as possible- it will help influence your own work and give you an idea about what is happening in contemporary art and a look back at where art has been. It will be a nice outing. Please consider coming. We will meet at 1:50 on the corner of 13th street and Inner Road (SW 5th ave) where me and my car will be waiting. Email me if you are thinking about coming so I have an idea of the number of people. Bring your student ID

This will be a great opportunity to look at the photography collection and get ideas of photographers to incorporate in your Visual Research Notebook.

I just had a very retro day- shot a few rolls of film and went to buy records with my roommate. It was fun.

I wanted to thank everyone for having film ready to develop on friday- good work. Remember to keep shooting! Craig wants 5 rolls of film for this project- that is more than one a week- so get on it! Remember that your images should have a concept and something that connects them together- if you want to run this idea by me let me know, we can meet before or after lecture next week.

I'm scared that I'm rewinding my film wrong... I'm supposed to feel tension and then know its almost ready but I don't really know how much tension the manual means. I'm just going to leave it in the camera until tomorrow??

Friday Lab- Sept 17th

Into the darkroom we will go!

On friday we will be getting our hands wet (literary) and begin processing our black and white film! It is important that on Friday you bring-

1. at least one roll of black and white film which you have shoot (remember bracketing!)

2. a developing tank (if you have one- the lab also has them)

3. a towel or something to dry your hands with

4. wear closed toed shoes

5. your negative sleeves to put your negatives in after they have been processed and dried

6. scissors if you have them

7. paper (we may have time to make contact sheets....)

8. Energy!

I am looking forward to doing the demo and seeing what types of photos you all have been taking...

End of Summer!!

The Dialogue Space show End of Summer had its opening reception this evening! Thanks for all who attended! It was a huge success. Make sure, if you were unable to come, to spend some time looking at the work in the hallway.

things to make sure before coming to crit-

1. have all of your work hung in the classroom and ready to begin discussing
2. have your visual resource book, with name somewhere on the book, ready to turn in
3. have a folder or some sort of way to collect your prints to turn into me so they are not easily lost
4. be awake and ready to contribute to discussion- remember participation is part of your grade also

optional-
crit days i usually ring in some sort of snack food- please, if possible or desirable, bring in a treat to share. the more food the more fun.

some helpful vocabulary to get us started..

Today is the first crit! So exciting!

I am looking forward to seeing your work and beginning a dialogue for the rest of the semester- creating an open forum is important to help all of us improve as artists-

Here is a lost of some of the vocabulary that we will be using to talk about photography- using the right terms will aid in thinking about photography on new levels...

aesthetic- A branch of philosophy concerned with discovering the origins of the art experience and the relationship between art and other aspects of culture- it refers to the concern with artistic qualities of form .

amorphous shape- A shape without clear definition:formless, indistinct, and of uncertain dimension.

approximate symmetry- The use of similar imagery on both sides of a central axis.

asymmetry- Having unlike, or non-corresponding, appearance -"without symmetry."

balance- A sense of equilibrium achieved through implied weight, attention, or attraction, but manipulating the visual elements with an artwork.

biomorphic shape- An irregular shape that resembles the freely developed curves found in living organisms.

closure- A concept derived from gestalt psychology describing the mental relationships that develop while incomplete information is grasped as a complete, unified whole; the artist provides visual suggestions, which the observer brings to final recognition.

composition- The total arrangement of all the elements in an artwork- sometimes interchangeable with the terms design and form.

concept- A comprehensive idea or generalization- an idea that brings diverse elements into a basic relationship.

content- The essential meaning and significant of a work of art- refers to the sensory, subjective, psychological or emotional properties a work of art contains, as opposed to its descriptive aspects alone.

contour- The line that defines the edge of an object of a drawn or painted shape- the outline contours may also be marked by the variations of tones, textures, or color.

craftsmanship- Aptitude, skill, quality workmanship in the use of tools and materials.

curvilinear-Stressing the use of curved lines, as opposed to rectilinear, which stresses straight lines.

economy- The distillation of the image to the basic essentials for clarity of presentation.

form- The organization and arrangement of visual elements that develop unity in artwork- the total appearance or organization of an artwork.

geometric shape- A shape that appears related to geometry; usually simple, such as a triangle, rectangle and circle.

graphic art- 2-dimensional art forms, such as drawing, painting, and printmaking.

harmony- The pleasing quality achieved by different elements of a composition interacting to form a whole.

implied line- Implied lines (subjective lines) are those that dim, fade, stop, and/or disappear. The missing portion of the line is implied to continue and is visually completed by the observer as the line reappears.

implied shape- A shape that does not physically exist but is suggested by dots, lines, areas, or their edges.

line- The path traced by the point of a tool, instrument, or medium as it moves across an area. A line is visible when it contrasts in value with its surroundings.

medium- The materials and means used to bring an artwork into existence.

monochromatic- Having only one hue; the complete range of value of one color from white to black.

motif- A design unit that is repeated often enough in the total composition to make it a significant or dominate feature.

movement- Eye travel directed by visual design in a work of art.

Naturalism- The approach to art that attempts a description of things as they appear in nature. Pure naturalism would contain no personal interpretation introduced by the artist.

negative area- The unoccupied or empty space in an artwork defined by the positive elements created by the artist.

nonrepresentational art- A type of art that is entirely imaginative and not derived from anything visually perceived by the artist and, consequently, not associated by the observer with any previously experienced natural object.

pattern- Any artistic design serving as a model for imitation. A repeated element and/or design that is usually varied and produces interconnections and obvious directional movements.

picture frame- The outermost boundary of the picture plane.

picture plane- The actual flat surface on which the artist executes a pictorial image. In some cases, the picture plane acts merely as a transparent plane of reference to establish the illusion of forms existing in a three-dimensional space.

positive area- The portion of an artwork in which the art elements (shape, line, etc) or their combination, produce the subject- nonrepresentational or recognizable images.

proportion- The comparative size relationship between the parts of a whole.

radial- Emanating from a center.

rectilinear shape- A shape whose boundaries consist of straight lines.

repetition- The use of the same visual effect a number of times in the same composition. Repetition may produce dominance, harmony, pattern or rhythm.

representational art- A type of art in which the subject is presented through the visual art elements so that the observer is reminded of actual objects.

rhythm- A sense of movement achieved by the repetition of visual units; the use of measured accents.

scale- Size relative to human dimensions or another standard unit of measure.

space- The interval, or measurable distance, between points or images.

style- A specific artistic character or dominate trend of form noted during a period of history or during an art movement. Style also refers to the expressive use of media that gives an artwork individual character.

subject- The persons, things, signs, or ideas represented in an artwork that express the artist's inspiration of intention.

subjective- That which is derived from the mind, reflecting a personal viewpoint, bias, or emotion.

symmetry- The mirrorlike repetition of appearances on both sides of an imaginary central axis.

texture- the surface character of a material that can be experienced through touch or the illusion of touch.

three-dimensional- Possessing a dimension of depth, in addition to having the dimensions of height and width.

transparency- A visual quality in which a distant image or distant can be seen through a nearer one.

two-dimensional- Possessing the dimensions of height and width.

unity- The result of bringing the elements of art into the appropriate ratio between harmony and variety to achieve a sense of oneness.

value- the relative degree of light or dark.

variety- Differences achieved by opposing, contrasting, changing, elaborating, or diversifying element in a composition to add individualism and interest.

void- An area lacking positive substance and consisting of negative space.

Signifiers in action

Here's the link to an amazing essay by Kelly T. Keating about the Untitled photographic public art created by Felix Gonzalez-Torres in 1991. The work was meant to be a sort of love letter to Torres' partner who had recently died of AIDS. The essay is a critique on this work and other similar pieces that have created signifiers leading to an instantly visually recognizable relationship between homosexuality and the AIDS virus.

ok, so i will not be in class tomorrow-but- Austin will be going into the darkroom with you and going over how to make photograms....

remember-

closed toed shoes

paper

interesting objects (textures-objects that are important to you or that you can use as metaphors for things- be creative and experiment with liquids [we have glass that you can set on top of your paper], flashlights, round objects, etc...)

visual research books- austin will be looking through them briefly to make sure you are keeping up to date with them.... print offs from the internet, magazine photos, sketches, anything! it is a scrap book for visual inspiration... you should be filling it up!

cameras- Austin can try and help you figure it out if it still is puzzling
